72 Hours in Magical Madrid

This AvidTravellers Madrid go to is jam-packed with informative comments and terrific experiences. Here is a overview of a few of the journeys highlights:

In late September 2024, Calum Glenny, the Avid Travellrer started a whirlwind 72-hour journey to Madrid with good friends, starting with a dynamic, history-filled city exploration. Our centrally located hotel on Calle de Atocha made it simple to gain access to Madrid's cultural and cooking highlights. Walking through dynamic squares, we immersed ourselves in the city's history and vibrant atmosphere.

Our group's varied preferences resulted in various activities. Suzanne and Richard began the firstday one night with a remarkable supper at Bodega de los Secretos, a comfortable, centuries-old dining establishment loaded with charm. On day two my better half and I signed up with a tapas and red wine walking tour led by the enthusiastic Mario. We visited numerous local hotspots. I was intrigued by the Meson de Champinon, a bar-restaurant that serverd mushrooms and only mushrooms. They were delicious, as was the authentic sangria which came with the food. A venue which the vegetarian members of our group really liked!

Day 3 was all about cooking, with Pamela and Bill organizing a paella masterclass at the elegant Ritz Mandarin Oriental. Chef Oliver Menendez assisted us through the intricacies of making traditional Valencian paella and black rice with squid and lobster. The experience was paired with tastings of regional sherries and red wines, making it one of the journey's highlights.

We settled the weekend with a see to Teatro Flamenco Madrid. This intimate location showcased the raw feeling and appeal of flamenco dancing, offering a perfect cultural capstone.

Throughout the trip, we delighted in memorable meals at regional dining establishments like Casa Verona and Casa Alberto, where we indulged in authentic Spanish meals such as anchovies in olive oil, croquettes, and even the well known calamari sandwich. The Mercado de San Miguel was another standout, using a peek into Spain's abundant culinary customs.
